Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," Healey said. "They were among numerous British troops on duty over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who endanger our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
