A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to original mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
People who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural changes.
